calendar quilt challenge '09

31 December 2008

please join us on a special quilting journey.
let's make a calendar quilt together!!!

what's a calendar quilt???
well...
the idea is to make a strip quilt by adding ONE fabric for EVERY day of the year.
you pick the appropriate fabric for that day...
depending on holiday, occasion, or even your mood.

guidelines are SUPER simple:
***
does NOT have to cover a one year timeline.
{it can be a record/memory quilt.}
***
deadline for completion is one year.
our quilts will run from 01.01.09-01.01.10
this means the quilt top itself.
{quilting & binding can be completed by the end of january.}
***
you can work at your own pace.
you don't HAVE to do a strip a day.
you can do a week at a time.
{even a month at a time.}
***
PLEASE sign up by january 7th.
{you can sign up in comments.}
***
if you need a steer in the right direction, you can follow my lead.
{or feel free to alter these to make your own!!!}

i will be using:
365 - 1" x 10" strips {ALL from my stash.}
making 4 columns of strips. {3 months per column.}
3 sashing strips {10" wide.}
undecided on borders. {game day decision.}
i WILL use applique on my sashing strips.

there are endless possibilities for YOUR quilt.
NO two quilts will be alike.
{especially if you focus on busting your stash!!!}

another really cool point is this:
sometimes i feel guilty for not sitting at my machine EVERY single day.
this challenge will ensure that i will.
so to me...this is like 2 challenges in one.

now i can NOT take credit for this idea.
ALL credit goes directly to pat sloan.
you can find VERY detailed ideas/instructions in her book "favorite techniques"
{yall can see a picture of pat's calendar quilt through that link as well!!!}
thank you pat SO much for this inspiration!!!

please sign up by january 7th.
this will ensure that we all start at around the same time.
{it's SUPER easy to catch up...just sew your first 7 strips together.}

if we have at least 25 people sign up...
i'll make a new blog dedicated to THIS project!!!
we'll be able to share pics easily and motivate each other.

thanks in advance for signing up.
if you do join in...please copy the button on my taskbar.
i'm SUPER excited to host my first challenge.

if yall have ANY questions feel free to ask them.
i'll answer them in the comments for all to see.

Pin It!

Okay count me in. This should be fun. I don't sit at my machine a lot either just because I like to hand applique more.

I've never done a long-term challenge quilt. I'm usually the 'how fast can I make a quilt' type of person but this sounds fascinating!

I'll give it a try in catch-up mode after I get the christmas stuff out of my sewing space.

Rachel, this really sounds very very good. I think it will be a lovely memory quilt for 2009! I'm joining in (O:> and would like to try it. Also a good way to get my stash shrink (i hope).

Ok, I think I'll put this one on my list. It's my first new project of 2009. I really hesitated because I have such a full plate already, but I really liked the look of Pat's. So this will be a Sew-Between for me!
Cheers,
Dionne

K so I'm saying up! I had a dream about this quilt and I'm thinking I'm going to sew in words and stuff into the strips for big events.

What are the sizes for the stripes and stuff?

Hi, Rachel! You know, I've "almost" done two of these -- one with Pat, and another that was more of a "journal" quilt, organized by an Australian woman whose name I can't now recall. So now, I think it's time to really do it. This is a year that I'm planning many changes in my life, so it will be a good one to commemorate in fabric. I think I'll combine the two concepts a bit, and some days will be a light-colored fabric that I'll "journal" on. I'm blogless at this point. You can reach me at thepoch[at]aol[dot]com.

Oh, I'm in! I'll try not to over-think and over-math... Though I'm pretty sure that there will be a bunch of rationalization: "Oh, I don't have to sew a strip today, I can sew 2 strips tomorrow..."

Hmmm. This might lead me to attempt to make a resolution... Hmmm...

I have never entered a challenge before but it would be a great idea for what someone else said, a memory quilt. What a great way to use up scraps of all the quilts my mother made.

That sounds great, but I'm almost lost. there are 31 days in Jan, only 28 in Feb., etc. Do the strips from Jan run into Feb. and then into Mar? Maybe I'm not thinking clearly enough to envision this in the brain yet. so how many rows of strips per month? are they horizontal or vertical? Am I thinking too much into this? Sorry, I know I wasn't even signed up by the 7th and now I'm asking all these questions that you may or may not have already answered--or because I wasn't signed up in time may not feel a need to answer.

Shelly - may I butt in? I (having nothing better to do!) sat down and wrote it all out. There are 90 days in the first column (Jan-Mar), 91 in the second (Apr-Jun), 92 in the 3rd (Jul-Sep), and 92 in the 4th (Oct-Dec). Pretty darned close. I decided I also wanted to use one "static" strip to separate each month from another (so I'm adding two more to each column). I figured I'd just sneak in two extra strips (or one deeper one) in the Jan-Mar column, and 1 extra strip in the 2nd column - in order to make them the same length as the 3rd and 4th. Heck, it's a quilt - not rocket science - so I'm going to break the rules as I please :-) Also, I bought a small journal where I'm keeping all this information, as well as writing down each day of the year, and jotting down a word or phrase for each day - might be a feeling, or the weather, or an event. As I cut the strips, I refer to the journal entries and BOLDLY choose fabric (FROM MY STASH!) that reminds me of my entry. You don't want to know the whole story, but we found a bloody milk jug on our deck on January 9, so that's what I wrote down for that day - I can't wait to BOLDLY choose something that reminds me of that! I've got strips cut for the first week and so far they are looking pretty darned good! I'm also fussing over what to do with the REST of the 1" x 42-45" strip (after I cut 10" off), and have been daydreaming about table runners, tote bags, etc. There'll be updates on my blog, for sure! Hope you have fun with your quilt - I already am!
