let's talk solids.

i personally love solids.
but anyone that has been reading this blog should already know that.
:P

i utilize solids in almost every single quilt that i design or make. {see proof here.}
there's just something about the crisp, clean break from prints that just melt my heart.

well like i told yall the other day, i've been working on new patterns.
to give a little sneak peak . . . one of those new patterns uses nothing but solids.
specifically the solids pictured above.
{fabric = pure elements by art gallery fabrics}

while picking fabrics for this particular pattern, i started to wonder what other peeps thought about solids.

you see, i believe that some quilts can look just as good, if not better, in solids.
that's not to say that i don't love me some prints. <--yall KNOW i do.
BUT i think that sometimes you just need a burst of color.
a color that is completely null & void of any distraction from prints &/or pictures.

so what do yall think about quilts made entirely of solids?!?!
are you for or against it?!?!
inquiring minds want to know.

i've been binding quilts and working on new patterns.
this is normally a super exciting thing, but when you can't take good pics, {thanks ohio} it's kinda stressful.
nonetheless, new patterns are coming soon.

i've been needing to get my hairs did, get a pedicure & get my eyebrows waxed.
my eyebrows are really driving me insane.
you know it's bad when you feel like eugene levy.
hubby says they're fine.
of course i cook all his meals. he HAS to say things like that.

i've been under the impression that there aren't enough throw pillows or aprons in my house.
i can't figure out which one to tackle first, so i don't tackle.
i just keep making these yummy pillows & aprons in my mind.

i've been planning my flower beds for like the past month or so.
i'm totally blaming desperate housewives for this.
i mean, have yall seen how flippin' gorgeous their yards are?!?!
i want to grow wisteria and i want to grow it now.

i've been evaluating my bloggy irregularity.
i used to post 3 times a week, without fail.
now i'm posting like once a weekish.
me no likey. me no likey at all.

i've been living on pinterest.
man oh man is that place a slippery slope.
i always have the best intentions.
i even try giving myself a time limit. keyword: try.
there's just something about pinterest that just sucks you in.

i've been meaning to reorganize my quilty area.
i gave the boys the little dresser i had that held all my magazines and such.
it kinda looks like an episode of hoarders is just waiting to happen.

i've been trying to plan a new tutorial.
i haven't posted a tutorial in forever.
this bugs me, hince the planning.

i've been needing a glue gun for years. <--yes years.
i don't own one. seriously.
i'm not sure how i make it through the day, let alone years without one.
and of course everything i want to make lately requires a glue gun.
i specifically wanna make these three things: bed skirt, fabric pom poms & hydrangea wreath.

i've been working on secret stuff.
stuff i'm dying to tell yall about, but can't.
this ties rather nicely into the "bloggy irregularity" problem.

i've been trying a new cleaning method for our bathroom.
so far, so good.
what is it with little boys?
they have the ability to aim, yet miss every single time?!?!
this boggles my mind.

i've been planning a trip with the hubby.
a trip to new york city.
have i ever mentioned that hubby & i have never had a getaway?!?!
well we're finally going to do it. next month.
just us. without the kids. in the big apple. and we're totally stoked.

i've been pretty saddened by the fact that picnik is closing.
i've been using it for years.
rest in peace picnik.
i will truly miss you.

i've been formally introduced to scentsy.
oh how i've been missing out.
my bathroom has never smelled better.
now i just need warmers for every room in my house and i'll be good to go.

i've been planning how to finish the girl's room.
we painted it last year, then nothing.
it's not that their room isn't cute, but their walls are bare.
i really need to rectify this. and soon.
this goes back to needing a glue gun AND living on pinterest.

i've been making homemade heating pads for the wives of hubby's coworkers.
at christmas the hubby asked me to make one for some dude's wife, now all the other dudes need them for their wives too.
good thing hubby is taking me on the aforementioned trip.

and lastly . . .
i've been missing yall.
there's something to be said about writing to yall and seeing what yall write back.
i promise i read every single comment and email.
so tell me what yall have been up to lately.

so my hubby is the real western fan in our house.
i tried to enlist his help in picking a winner. keyword tried.

i read him comment after comment.
he had reactions like "ohhh yeah, that's a good one" and "just because someone wears a cowboy hat doesn't mean it's a western" <--yall know how guys are. lol.

well then it happened.
someone mentioned brad pitt.
then someone else mentioned my all time fav movie, legends of the fall.
hubby had a hayday with this.
"yeah, your readers really know YOU." <--insinuating that some of yall might have been trying to butter me up by playing the brad pitt card ;)
note: every time i read him a comment that said "tombstone" or "mclintock" he was ready to deem those readers as automatic winners. and then he told me to pick anyone that said "shane" since that's his name. silly hubby.

no worries though.
everyone had a chance of winning regardless of their movie choice.

build a quilt workshop: cascade

the first set of build a quilt workshop classes went over really well.
so well, in fact, that i've been gearing up & making plans for a new class.
:)

in case you missed out on the first classes, here's a little refresher. . .
the idea is to host online workshops in a quilt along style atmosphere.
we'll be using a private flickr group as our platform.
and everyone loves taking classes with their friends, right?!?!

class will start mid january.
once your class fee is paid, you'll be invited to join our private flickr group.
and that's when the fun starts.
{providing we all like this concept, more classes will be added.}

cascade class-
in this class we will build a modern patchwork quilt.
this class is perfect for beginners through advanced quilters.

grandmomma's sausage cheese pie.

grandmomma's sausage cheese pie.

here's what yall will need:
1/2 pkg jimmy dean sausage
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
4 eggs
1/2 cup milk
frozen pie crust
optional: crushed parsley flakes

the making part:
brown sausage; drain.
mix all ingredients together.
pour in frozen pie crust.
optional: sprinkle crushed parsley flakes on top.
bake 350' for 30 minutes or until firm & golden brown. <--it's best to set these on a cookie sheet while baking. it helps brown the buttom of the crust.

let it cool.
hork it down.

note: we ALWAYS double this recipe because it's gone in a blink of an eye.
i mean, you might as well use the whole pkg of sausage.
PLUS the frozen pie crust package already contains 2 crusts. <--win/win :)

if you like a little kick to your breakfast, grandmomma always did 1/2 pkg mild sausage with 1/2 pkg hot sausage. <--i just use a whole package of regular or country mild to keep it kid friendly.
BUT if you're the type that likes a little sweetness, the maple sausage is pretty good too.

this is perfect for company.
grandmomma served it with fresh fruit, like cantaloupe.
i can personally just stand over it and eat straight from the pie plate with a fork. <--don't judge :P

oh and one more thing...
not all sausages are created equal.
i'm a huge jimmy dean advocate.
i believe that jimmy dean is the BEST sausage in the world & other sausages just aren't welcomed in my house.
so please, use jimmy dean if you make this recipe.

my current project is making a gozillion homemade heating pads.
vanessa has a simple tutorial, if you're looking for one.

i think that different colors & prints stimulate my creative side in different ways.

i have never, ever been a fan of purple - but pat bravo seems to have recently changed that.

sewing with oilcloth.

fact: i've always been afraid to sew with oilcloth.
so much so that i've never even purchased oilcloth or laminated fabrics.

while at market, i just happened to come across a book signing with miss kelly mccants.
she was promoting her book sewing with oilcloth.
needless to say, i was intrigued, so i stuck around.

kelly talked a little bit about oilcloth and her book.
she even handed out little samples of oilcloth so we could make a small project from the book.
note: i totally recommend her book. <--it's SUPER informative.

well i finally got the courage to play with my oilcloth :)
obviously this was a smaller project, but sometimes a small project is all it takes.
btw: i think i see some cute oilcloth banners in my future.

so are yall for or against oilcloth???
inquiring minds want to know.

so what happened to november?!?!
seriously.

sorry i was awol, but we had a whole lot going on over here.
everyone in the griffith house was sick at least twice. <--hardcore flu type sick.
our daughter kept coming home with head lice thanks to her school bff.
patterns were printed with a major error.
oh and there was a little flea bombing mixed in as well.

i haven't forgotten about yall. promise.

i'm SO glad it's december.
november was ugh with a capital u.

the most creative thing i've done lately is decorate for christmas.
:)

now that the sickness is gone, i'm trying to get back in the groove.
i would like to start with remaking our stockings.
stockings i made 5ish years ago.
stockings that kind of make me cringe because of unmatched seams & cheap fabric.
stockings that my hubby just happens to love.
stay tuned for how that will go down. <--wish me luck :)

fall quilt market recap.

even though i already knew what to expect, market still hit me like a mack truck.

i'm still nursing a market hangover.
i've been home since sunday night and just unpacked my suitcases yesterday.
and that's just my clothes. <--i still have all my market loot to go through :)

market is like a tornado.
there one minute, gone the next.
so i take notes.
notes that i'm still trying to work through.
it's a good thing, but i really just wanna nap. HA.

day 1 - schoolhouse/sample spree day:
first things first . . .
to the two super sweet girls that walked up to me & v early that morning -
i am SO sorry if we seemed short with yall.
we were trying to figure out where to pick up our badges.
and we couldn't find our other friend.
we were caught off guard and yall were super sweet to introduce yourself to us.
and honestly for the next couple days, v & i would bring yall up in coversation because we felt horrible. we're not jerks. promise. <--i feel a little bit better now. phew.

i only had one schoolhouse session in my sights, but i ended up in a few more...
valori wells, vanessa christenson, thomas knauer, betz white and lotta jansdotter.

speaking of betz white . . . lookie here at us.
so true story: kimberly jolly {owner of fat quarter shop} was all "rachel stand over there with betz so we can get take a picture with you, her & your bag" and all i could think was "but i didn't get the button put on the front pocket yet" <--talk about being a dork, huh?!?!
i'm proud to report that since this pic, a lovely green button has been added.

sample spree was sample spree. <--kinda like the running of the bulls but instead of running from bulls, people are running to fabric :P

day 2 - floor is open:

i just love these sisters.
they never, ever fail at making me laugh.
i'm eager to make myself one of those dotty bags. and i will. one day.

i already adore sandy klop, but her booth this market . . . yum!!!
love, love, love.

i'm also in love with the look & feel of lu summers' fabrics & whatnots.
SO darn pretty.
and that quilt . . . *covet*

i spotted lori holt's fabric right away.
i just love her style.
just look at those pom poms. and those lamps. *swoon*
i ~~want~~ need this fabric.

and this fabric *sigh* by my mind's eye.
i'm really digging the peachy-ness of this line with those yummy greys.
SO pretty. and oh so me.
another must have in my book.

ah betz white's booth.
just lovely.
i promise i would think that even if my quilt wasn't in it. really.
{the quilt in the back = my melly}

and this girl - emily herrick - i could just be her bff in real life. for reals.
after years of "knowing" each other online, we finally met.
instantly we were down like 4 flat tires on a low rider.
love this girl. love her fabric. and love that we finally met.
word.

and last but not least . . .
i am in love with pat bravo & art gallery fabrics.
i have loved them from afar for quite some time now, but now it's capital L O V E love. <--and yall know i don't use capital letters lightly :P

i mean just look at this wall.
i could frame this and hang it in my quilty room. for reals.
and i NEED that pillow. like yesterday.

all in all it was a great market.
even though market is way bigger than little ol' me, i still had my fair share of representaion.
i had a total of 8 quilts among various booths.
and that was both refreshing and a little terrifying. lol.

i'm missing a ton of pics, but c'est la vie.
i carried my cell phone AND my camera, yet still came home without the pics i needed.

for instance . . .
i had so much fun catching up with peeps like julie, john, kate, jana, katy, cara, jen and so many others.
but i'm kicking myself for not taking pics!!!
all yall rock my socks off btw.

georgia.

i give yall georgia :)

georgia is always on my mind.
and by always, i mean always.

it's home. my roots. and my family history.
<3

on top of being raised in the great state of georgia, there was another georgia in my life.
my great grandmother.
{my daddy's momma's momma.}

her name was georgia, but everyone called her georgie.
well not me. she was mal to me. {pronounced mall.}

i used to spend the summer with her.
she taught me how to make biscuits from scratch, how to make homemade jam, how to hang laundry out on the line & how to snap beans for supper.

she amazed me with what her hands could do.
she was the real deal...the epitome of all things good in my book.

she was also a legit do-it-all-by-hand quilter.
i never learned any quilty things from her, but my mawmaw says she did extraordinary things.

my mal is the very reason i picked up quilting.
honestly.

i try to remember the quilts in her house.
the one i try the hardest to envision is the one that was on her bed.
i don't remember the pattern at all, but i think it was made using old clothes or feedsacks.
i can't even visualize it clearly, but i can remember seeing blues and reds.
and i remember sleeping there with her.
{mal & pal had seperate bedrooms.}

i was almost 12 years old when mal died. she was 91 years old.
i will never, ever forget her & how she was the female patriarch on that side of the family.

when mal passed away all her quilts were devvied up to be given to all us grandkids.
it's heartbreaking to say that my quilt {along with my sibling's quilts} were somehow misplaced before we were old enough to have them.

i wonder frequently what "my" quilt would have been.
it's kind of fun not knowing, but what i wouldn't give to have that quilt.
or any of her quilts for that matter.

to honor my mal, i wanted to have something quilty named georgia.
so georgia the pattern was born.

georgia is a pattern that i guest designed for it's sew emma.

to hide or not to hide???

i'm curious...
do yall store your quilts with the front facing out or do yall hide the fronts???

here's my two cents:
mostly our quilts sit {or hang} with their fronts facing out.
but then again, depending on the quilt, i might store them with the backing facing out.
oh and if i travel with my quilts, i always fold them with the backing facing out.

note: my kids have their own quilts plus we have quilts that we all use & abuse.
{livingroom quilts, quilts we play peekaboo with, quilts that build tents, quilts for football, etc.}
but we do have some quilts that are my "working girls" that travel to shops & such.
and those are "no touchy" for the kiddos. lol.

so which do yall do???

rachel's beef tips & noodles.

rachel's beef tips & noodles.

here's what yall will need:
1 1/2 - 2 lbs frozen beef stew meat
1 big can {26oz} cream of chicken soup
1 envelope lipton soup mix <--i use beefy onion OR savory herb with garlic
1 cup water
1 package cooked egg noodles

the making part:
mix cream of chicken soup, lipton soup mix & water in bowl.
place frozen beef stew meat in crockpot.
pour soup mixture over meat.
cook in crockpot on low for 6 hours.

add the cooked egg noodles to the meat & gravy right in the crockpot.
{makes for easier clean up.}

hork it down.

this meal is a must in the griffith house.
it's one of mr griffith's fav meals of all time.
the meat is oh so yummy & tender.
and i just love to sop up my gravy with a piece of buttered bread.
mmmm gravy.

note: you could add mushrooms if you wanna, but we no wanna.
well mr griffith might wanna, but mrs griffith don't.
:P

oh and this is THE perfect meal when you don't feel like cooking.
OR if you've been quilting all day. <--ask me how i know this. HA.

my good friend, miss emily cier {aka the mastermind behind carolina patchworks}, is back with another book!!!
woot, woot.

scrap republic is flat out awesome. for real.
it's the perfect book for peeps that love color.

the quilts in the book are scraptastic, but emily is SO cool that she gives yardage requirements in case you wanna aim for a more controlled quilt.

hands down this is a book that i would recommed to all my peeps.
so trust me that yall ~~want~~ need it!!!

today i'm gonna talk to yall about the color white.
and i'll argue with anyone that says white isn't a color - cause it SO is.
*wink*

i believe that snow is god/nature's way of making us fully aware of all the other colors/things around us.

the 3rd best white thing, in my book...a clean creative slate.
any color + any placement = endless possibilities my friends.

the 4th best white thing, in my book...white fabric.
i really think that white fabric makes the quilting world go round.
and white doesn't have to be white persay.
it can be cream, ecru, ivory, snow, buttercream, feather, bone, meringue, eggshell, natural or porcelain.

the 5th best white thing, in my book...white dishes.
food is just WAY more appealing when it's served on white.
idk why, it just is.

in conclusion: white is SUPER refreshing, speaks volumes given the proper accents AND is the color that binds all other colors together.

it's something i've been contemplating for a long, long time.

the idea is to host online workshops in a quilt along style atmosphere.
we'll be using a private flickr group as our platform.
and everyone loves taking classes with their friends, right?!?!

classes will start mid october.
once your class fee is paid, you'll be invited to join our private flickr group.
and that's when the fun starts.
{providing we all like this concept, more classes will be added.}

in this class we will build a simplistic patchwork quilt, start to finish, using all the basics.

it's the perfect size to use when i trim up my binding strips.
i love having a little ruler for these small trims, don't yall???

i also like the classic 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" ruler.
it's real handy if you're an improv block maker & simply need to trim your blocks.

the yardstick comes in handy for both measuring yardage as well as trimming borders. <--i'm not a fan of trimming borders. lol.

i enjoy the red lines on the rulers, but i think the frost is a smidge too heavy for my taste.
not enough that i don't wanna use the ruler though.

all in all i would recommend these rulers to yall.
you really can't beat the fact that it sharpens your blades while you cut.
win-win scenario.

so i was on the phone with my quilter the other day and she said...

i can't believe i forgot to show yall my completed postage stamp quilt.

me thinks yes.

and that binding...yummmmmmy :)

i love the fabrics.
i love the classic feel to it.

revamping.

definition of revamp:
remake. revise. renovate. reconstruct.

yep.
that pretty much sums things up in the griffith house.

let me 'splain...
i went from having 1 kiddo in school to having 3 in school.
which is quite the adjustment if i do say so myself.

football & cheerleading is in full swing.
practices 3 times a week with games on saturdays.

the hubby is now officially back to work since his surgery.
which i'm very, very thankful for.

and if you mix all that with my 4 kiddos battling fall colds on top of an unexpected hospital stay...WHAM it's 2 weeks later.

i'm remaking, revising, renovating & reconstructing.
so here's to revamping.

falling for fall.

it happens every year.

i fall madly in love with fall.
i just can't help it.
i'm a fall/winter girl.

so i have this rule.
a rule that i can't decorate for fall until september 1st.
mainly because i get the itch in early august.
of course i know it's like lava outside but my brain insists that "if i decorate it, fall will come."

some years i do really good.
and some years not so much.

this year is that year.

i totally caved.
i went ahead and decorated for fall.
and you know what?!?!
i'm not the least bit sorry.

anyone else have this problem???

the one with the jello conversation.

*warning: if you love jello, run away & never look back at this post.*

so let me start by setting the scene...
it's tuesday night. it's like 10pm.
we're sitting at this lovely farmhouse dinner table and everything is all gravy.
{we = me, jennifer, julie & rita.}

we're talking about quilts.
we're talking about family.
and then we started talking about food.

yeah we should've just stopped while we was ahead.
but NO. no we didn't.

*insert the jello conversation*
i'm not even entirely sure how we started talking about jello.
and honestly i think that once i found out the truth...i was in complete shock.

they proceed to tell me that jello is made from...hooves.
yep. real freaking hooves.
like from real pigs & real cows.
and not just their hooves but also their intestines.

i'm sitting there and all i can say is "shut the front door."
i'm literally reliving all the times i horked down some jello.
i'm talking throwing down some mad amounts of hooves in my day.

of course i don't believe it.
but NO someone {aka julie} says "google it!!!"
and so we google it WHILE rita grabs a box a jello from the kitchen.
bad idea. again.

let me just say that bill cosby is SO not on my favorite list of people right now.
shame on you bill cosby.
everything is SO not "OBKB" with this.

also keep in mind that i'm in the southern part of ohio.
i'm totally & completely kid free and without the hubby.

AND to top it ALL off.
i'm headed home last night and i'm not even kidding when i say that this...
my hubby says, and i quote, "the kids made you some sugar cookies & JELLO while you were gone."

what the heck?!?!
of course my kids made jello.
we haven't eaten jello in months BUT MY KIDS MADE ME JELLO!!!

yeah.
this is a true story.

and i'd like to say that no animals were harmed in that making of this blog post...
BUT i have a whole freaking bowl of hooves in my fridge as we speak.

epic fail.

first & foremost: my hubby is recovering marvelously & i'm easing back into things.
thanks SO much for all yall's thoughts, prayers, emails & phone calls.
yall are the best. <--for reals.

so hubby was a groomsmen at one of his best friend's wedding just days after his surgery.
he was such a trooper.
he even agreed to let the photographer take our picture. <--miracle. *wink*
i sure do love this guy.

secondly: today is july 25th.
that means christmas day is exactly 5 months away. <--yayyy!!!

welcome to the finishing part of the synchronized quilt along yall :)

by now everyone should have a completed quilt top.
we're gonna finish this bad boy up now.

there's just a few final steps:
layer, baste, quilt & bind.

after that:
wash & dry your quilt.
when your quilt comes out of the dryer it should have some strings hanging around.
simply clip those strings with scissors.

when you're done...pat yourselves on the back!!!
yall just completed a yummy quilt in 3 weeks.

synchronized squares quilt along: stitching

welcome to the stitching part of the synchronized squares quilt along yall :)

grab all those squares we trimmed down last week.

take a SOLID square & fold it in half. then in half again.
{making four quarters within your square.}

set aside.

take a PRINT square & fold it in half. then in half again.
{making four quarters within your square.}

lay your PRINT square, right side up, over your SOLID square.
make sure to match your fold lines. <--this helps your square become synchronized.

stitch your PRINT square onto your SOLID square with a 1/4" seam allowance.

after you've stitched, cut your WHOLE square in half. then in half again.
tip: layer cake squares = 10" so you're cutting in half at 5"
this yields 4 little stitched squares.

repeat this process for ALL your SOLID & PRINT squares.
this yields 144 little stitched squares.

mix all the colors & prints up into a layout that pleasing to you.
then sew 4 little stitched squares together to make 1 synchronized square.

repeat this process for ALL little stitched squares.
this yields 36 synchronized squares.

now take those 36 synchronized squares & lay them out in a 6x6 block layout.
stitch them together & you've got yourself a completed quilt top.
easy peasy.

now get to stitching & we'll meet back up next week.

synchronized squares quilt along: preparing

welcome to the preparing part of the synchronized squares quilt along yall :)

first things first...
we need to trim all your PRINT layer cake squares down.
your squares will need to be 7 1/2" x 7 1/2"
*do not discard those lovely leftover 2 1/2" strips though*

now we need to trim all your SOLID layer cake squares down.
your squares will need to be perfect 10" x 10" squares.

now's the perfect time to make our binding. <--no groaning!!! :D
if you want a scrappy binding, simply use the discarded 2 1/2" strips from above.
if you want regular binding, simply use 3/4 yards of matching fabric.

now trim those blocks & make that binding.
& we'll meet back up next week.

i can't wait to start seeing yall's pics show up in the flickr pool.

welcome to the synchronized squares quilt along yall.

i love christmas SO stinkin' much that i feel the need to be ahead of the game.
meaning i'm a christmas in june kind of girl.
christmas in july is just way too far away.
plus i really, really can't stand summer. ugh.

so to kick off the "i wish it was fall-football-winter-christmas-anything-but-summer" season {lol}...
i'm gonna teach yall how to make your very own synchronized squares quilt!!!
{we'll spend the next few weeks making it.}

this week we will focus on our starting materials.
our quilt will be approximately 55" square.
yep. the perfect "lounge on the couch" size.
:)

i cheated this time and had my quilt finished before the announcement.
how else would i be able to convey it's yummy scruffily come & get me goodness?!?!
*sigh*

materials needed:
1 print layer cake of your choice
1 bella solids layer cake of your choice
3/4 yard binding OR use scraps from your layer cake for scrappy binding
4 yards backing

for those inquring minds, i used:
a flurry {by kate spain} layer cake {get yours here.} <--hi kate. xoxo.
& moda bella solids in pure white {get yours here.}

hey p.s. i quilt readers it's julie from jaybird quilts
rachel's kiddies got sick...and then got her sick... & since she still a bit under the weather i said i'd step in.

so i'm going to tell you a story of how the internet gave me a bff.

before i had my own blog i read a few regularly, one of which was "p.s. i quilt"
this rachel girl seemed fun, real & i liked reading her posts.
she didn't use capital letters much either... a habit i shared.

i started my own blog & we began to form a bloggy friendship.
not long into that friendship rachel trusted me with her treasured pinwheel quilt & i quilted it for her.
slowly we went from the occasional e-mails to e-mailing every day.

then i remember like it was yesterday getting a really exciting email accepting my first project on the moda bake shop.
i sent rachel an e-mail to tell her & the e-mail ended with "i'd call you if I had your phone number"
her next e-mail included her phone number & i called her.
we talked for what seemed like forever... commenting on the fact that we both had different voices than we thought the other would have & chatting about everything and anything.
later that night rachel sent me an e-mail that included "we SO talked on the phone."

from there we'd have the occasional phone call to talk... usually about something quilt related.
we planned on going to quilt market together that fall and started to talk more & more often... and eventually we were talking every day.

this photo was taken about 10 minutes after we met in person for the first time.
i immediately felt like i had known this girl forever... she just has that way about her.

fall 2009 quilt market

if our friendship had stayed at that level... i would have been happy.
rachel was a great friend & a person i could trust to give me honest feedback on in-progress quilt things.
we had BIG dreams of designing in the quilt world.

but it got better.
rachel became my bff.
she listened to me day in & out and helped to heal a broken heart.
she has been there when i've lost family members.
she was there when elijah was diagnosed.
she's been there for me in the good times too.
rachel has become the person i can call no matter what, no guards, no fears & i know she'll listen and still be there tomorrow.
{i'm also the same for her}

rachel & i are opposites in many ways... but that has only made our friendship stronger.
she's the triangle girl & i like squares
i love math & she doesn't so much
she's married with 4 kids & i'm just me :-)
she's southern & i'm from philly
i hate cooking & rachel loves it.
while we both have read/watched harry potter & twilight i'm on team potter & she's on team twilight.
{{rachel edit: i'm actually team harry potter & team twilight. i can't & won't pick sides. lol.}}

it was really hard for rachel that she had to miss this past quilt market.
we had grand plans for my booth & the show but hey life happens and we go with it.
rachel could have been all "woe is me i'm not there"
BUT she wasn't
instead she was my PR rep.
via twitter/facebook/flickr and even my blog she kept everyone up to date on my booth & market while i was too busy myself to do any posting.

during setup i spotted her escapde quilt before it got hung up in the kona booth. i quickly asked candi to snap this pic so i could send it to rachel.
a few people wondered what i was doing... but i knew the photo would make rachel smile.
rachel & i are both following our dreams by designing quilts.

spring 2011 quilt market

i had many goals, hopes & dreams when i started my blog...
but never in a million years did i think that my blog would connect me with people in the incredibly genuine way that it has.
i've made many friends through my blog... but rachel is special.

had anyone told me 2 years ago that the internet would give me a bff i would have laughed.
"how could anyone... especially someone who doesn't see me regularly become my bff."
but it happened.
and i can't imagine my world without rachel.

rachel will be back soon... but in the meantime i hope you have enjoyed this peek inside our friendship.
{and i hope rachel doesn't kick my butt for anything i revealed... but i'm pretty sure i'm good.}

nine months.

today = the nine month old mark.
*insert slight panic attack*

so what's happening in miss lindsey's neck of the woods?!?!
she sings. and at the top of her lungs.
she loves bath time. and loves splashing water with her feet.
she crawls. and crosses the living room in about .2 seconds.
she sits up on her own. and can even feed herself little finger foods.
she dances. and loves to hear her daddy play the guitar. <--takes after her momma :)
she pulls herself up on her knees. and hangs on with her mega kung fu grip.
and today we learned patty cake. lots and lots of patty cake.

my bag confession.

i used to be anti bag girl.
really.

i never wanted to make bags.
seeing bags on blogs kinda annoyed me.
yeah. i had issues.

then i went to texas. {see my san antonio post here.}
all these ladies had the bestest bags in the world.
bags that made me wish i was cool and had bags of my own.

the ladies of the uumc quilt guild roped me in.
i'm addicted now.
like way addicted.

my lovely sponsor claudia {& her sister marci} had bags of every shape & size.
we carted everything from food to quilts to a spare change of clothes & shoes.
and that's just to name a few.

i loved their bags.
i needed their bags.
heck i was jealous of their bags.

so what was a girl to do...shop of course!!!
i needed to make my own bags. like pronto.

i bought lots o' stuff.
fabrics for bags.
buttons for bags.
bag patterns.
& then more fabrics for bags.

then it hit me...i'm SO not a bag maker.
*mini panic attack*

so the night before i left texas, claudia & marci prepped me on making a real bag.
we cut out all the pattern pieces, fused it & even added the button.
they talked me through what to do once i got home to actually finish it.
they even told me to call if i had trouble.

and yall know what?!?! i did it!!!
i came home and made a real bag.

i use this bag every single day. without fail.
it's my "go to" bag.
all yall should have one of your own.
*for size reference: there were 2 folded lap size quilts in the bag when i took this pic*

i should add that while in texas...
one guild member offered to make me a bag that every uumc guild member had.
another guild member gave me one of her bags that i had complimented in class.
marci offered to make me a bag while she was making herself a new bag.
we prepped a whole other bag for me to complete here at home.
AND we completed a super easy bag that i just couldn't live without.

to say my bag collection is growing might be an understatement.
not to mention i currently have patterns & fabrics ready for at least 4 more bags.

let's talk binding.

so binding...
you love it or you hate it?!?!
you cut strips at 2 1/2" or something else?!?!
you make it scrappy or you make it matchy matchy?!?!
you make it straight grain or bias?!?!
you do it by hand or you do it by machine?!?!
you prepare them in advance or you wait until last minute?!?!

inquiring minds want to know.

here's my two cents:
i love it. <--but i used to hate it.
i cut my strips at 2 1/4" <--i highly encourage all yall to try it at least once.
i mostly do matchy matchy. <--but i love a good scrappy binding.

i might be a tad bit biased, but she's perfect in my eyes.
and i can honestly say she's one of my top five fav quilts of all time.

i finished this quilt early LAST year!!! <--i know!!!
and fyi: sometimes it SUPER hard to keep big quilty secrets from yall.
nonetheless i'm SO excited to finally show her off!!! <--i'm a proud parent!!!

the truth is...

i can't read books on a regular basis. especially if it's a series.
i get way too sucked in.
like i don't do laundry or quilt & we eat SUPER easy meals.
it's bad. real bad.

i don't own an ironing board.
i always intend to buy one, but i just don't.

sometimes harry potter hangs out with my toddlers while i quilt.
they can probably quote the first two movies in their entirety.
harry potter is like family in the griffithdor house.

i live in comfy clothes.
i get dressed in "real clothes" long enough to leave the house, but as soon as i'm back home, bring on my comfy digs.
BUT if i had my way, i wish we all still dressed like it was the ol' days...
corsets, cross cut bias dresses & heels for the gals.
adorable wool caps with trousers & suspenders for the fellas.

i'm the go to person for people who can't remember movie actors names.
most of the time i can tell you the name of an actor within .2 seconds.
my hubby teases me that i know all the extra's, key grips AND their cousins.

i procrastinate. badly.
i even get really mad at myself about it, yet i still do it.
what's wrong with me?!?!

in the past day & a half i've eaten almost a whole damn box of fudge rounds.
which is really weird because i'm SO the oatmeal creme pie kind of girl.

i went and saw water for elephants last weekish & can't stop thinking about it.
is this because of robert pattinson?!?!
i wanna say no, but is that the whole truth, nothing but the truth, so help me god?!?!

i have a favorite cuss word. one that i just love, but i can't say it.
it's kinda like pringles. once you pop, you can't stop.
so enlight of that, i say kid friendly fake cuss words.
my kids think it's hilarious.
say it with me: "what the flagnog?!?!"

i'm SUPER ocd.
for instance when i go to the movie theatre i literally count the seats.
i have to make sure i sit in the exact middle of the row PLUS it has to be half way up.
and that's just ONE example of my ocdness.

instead of cleaning out my fridge like a good girl, i was a slacker.
of course there was that one bowl of god knows what on the bottom shelf all the way in the back.
i threw the whole doggone bowl in the trash because i didn't want to empty & wash it.
who does that?!?!

maybe i should say a few novenas or something.
:P

i'm taking pics of my maple syrup pool with it's blueberry & pancake swimmers.
all while thinking about the matching bella solids in my head.

today was one of those days.
yall know this kind of day, right?!?!

the kind of day when your to do list is more like your to don't list.
and really it's all because you feel like you're up to your eyeballs in things you need to do instead of doing the things you want to do.

yeah. that's me alright.

so today i ignored my to do list & did something i wanted to do.
a little instant gratification project if you will.
don't yall love those???

i made me a little homemade heating pad.
:D

even though i easily could've made a whole cloth one, i wanted something a little more fun.
plus i wanted a kill two birds with one stone kind of project. <--to make me feel better about dissin' my to do list.

the deets:
in early march those lovely sweetwater gals introduced custom subway art.
*swoon*
i almost fell off of my chair.

well not only did they introduce their newest awesomeness...they were giving some away.
guess who won?!?! <--moi.

and this ladies & gentlemen is now one of my all time fav items in our house.
i will keep it forever & ever.
pinky swear.

i may or may not have cried when i opened it.
i'll never tell.
:P

the quality is just a-ma-zing.
and it's just perfect in every way.

trust me when i say that all yall need one of your own.

rachel's mexican pasta.

rachel's mexican pasta

what yall will need:
3 cups uncooked rotini noodles
2 jars {16 oz} your fav salsa
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese <--i use a mexican blend
1 cup sour cream OR cottage cheese
1 can {16 oz} black beans <--i use bush's
1 can {16oz} drained whole kernel corn
1/4 cup fresh cilantro

the making part:
cook rotini according to package. drain.

mix rotini, salsa, 1 cup of cheese, sour cream, beans, corn & cilantro.

spray 9x13 casserole dish with cooking spray.
spoon the above yum yum mix into pan.
top with remaining cheese.

bake 375' for 20 minutes.

hork it down.

the only downfall is it's meatless.
this is a big deal in the griffith house.
my hubby is a meat & potatoes kind of guy.
feel free to add taco meat to the mix before baking.
{1 lb ground beef cooked, drained. add taco seasoning.}
- fyi: shredded chicken would work just as well -

this is THE perfect meal when you don't feel like cooking.
OR if you've been quilting all day. <--ask me how i know this. HA.

so why did i start a blog post like this?!?!

well i have google alerts set for me & this here blog.
you know...just in case.

99.9% of the time i get a notice & it's cool.
susy whatsherface at blahblahzee blog made my sruffily quilt.
so i comment and then the blogging world is a happy place.

today was different.

that little alert popped into my email and WHAM!
someone decided it would be cool to copy & paste my whole blog post into a forum.
not a good idea folks.

i work really hard on this blog.
it may not seem like it, but trust me that i put alot of time & effort into ps i quilt.

i do "get" that so & so was just trying to open the ripping vs cutting convo on a message board.
i can respect that.
it is a very interesting conversation.
but use your own words, please.

so i write this special post to say this...
RESPECT what bloggers put out there.
RESPECT their time & effort.
RESPECT copyrights.
& RESPECT the person behind the blog.

that is all.

edit to add:
i've had a few questions about google alerts...
basically you type in your blog name, your company name, etc.
and ANY TIME your name {or whatever you set the alert to} is put on the internet, you get emailed about it.
you can choose if you want to be notified per instance, once a day, once a week, etc.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT FOLKS.

to rip or not to rip???

so let's talk ripping vs cutting.

while i was in san antonio i talked with the owner of sew special quilts about this very subject.
fyi: they rip, but they will cut if asked.
while talking with her i thought...i wonder how everyone else feels about this.

i have seen it done both ways.
i have heard the positives & negatives to both sides.
i've heard the "that's how shops did it in the ol' days" rebutle.
i've even seen shops lose business because of the "cutting is against shop policy" line.

so i wanted to talk to a few of my fav quilt shops. {one brick & mortar. one online.}
i wanted to get views from both sides.
it just so happens that they're the opposite of each other in the ripping/cutting department.
which made my research go quicker. lol.

my fav online shop = fat quarter shop
they cut.
they cut so many layers & orders that it would take forever to live up to their SUPER fast shipping if they had to rip orders all day.
and on top of that when you rip, it damages about 1/2" on either side of your fabric by stretching & pulling.
they agree that ripping is good for straight of grain, but they'll stay cutters.

my fav brick & mortar = people, places & quilts - summerville, south carolina
they rip.
it's important to them that you have a straight of grain piece rather than pretty edges.
they recommend washing & pressing your fabrics to even out the distortion from ripping.
although they are firm believers in ripping, they will cut if asked.

so let's have an open debate...
to rip or not to rip???

are yall for or against ripping???
inquiring minds want to know.
if you're a quilt shop...i highly encourage you to jump in and give your two cents.

just one star can comfort a solider.

i've joined moda in their challange.
a challenge that is close to my heart.

moda's challenge is to piece, quilt & bind 100 quilts in 100 days for soliders.
and they need 1800 star blocks to reach this goal.

what does this have to do with you?!?!
well yall can help make these quilts come to life.

here's what you do...
make a star block.
sign it.
send it to moda.
easy peasy.
{fabric requirements, block pattern & mailing address HERE.}

it takes just a few minutes to whip up this star block.
a few minutes & a few scraps to make a serviceman smile.

i'd like to introduce yall to melly.

i'm in love. again.
this one tugs on my heartstrings.
my daughter miss melanie was the inspiration for this quilt.

so why was melanie my inspiration?!?!
i wanted a "hope chest" quilt for her.

growing up in the south, all young gals looked forward to a hope chest.
a hope chest is a homemade cedar chest that is filled with treasures you will need, use & love when you marry your special someone.

every girl needs a hope chest.
her daddy makes it & her momma fills it.
and NO hope chest is complete without a quilt!!! <--that's a fact.

my design notes for this quilt:
something timeless
show off bigger chunks of yummy prints
use simplistic piecing
utilize lots o' bella solids

i think i nailed it.

remember when i told yall that i love paula deen.
well love might've been too vague of a word.

btw: if you haven't heard my paula deen pie story...
run. do not walk. go as fast as you can & read it before reading the rest of this post.

back to what i was saying...oh yeah...i'm a little addicted to paula deen.
i inhaled that $8 pie. i own her cookbooks. i ummm get her magazine.
yeah. addicted.

enter my newest paula deen fix: her cookware.
*drool*

i've been holding out. really.
i wanted the "butter" cookware, but couldn't ever find it when i wanted it.

well then i came home from teaching in san antonio...and wham bam thank you mam!!!
hubby bought me two pieces of paula's "robin's egg blue" cookware.

so then yesterday happened.
*sigh*

we were standing there looking paula in the face...well her face on the box.
& i couldn't decide how far i was gonna push this paula deen purchase.
then my hubby actually said it: "get it all. you know you want it anyways."
*que the hallelujah chorus*

i have WAY more than two pieces of paula deen cookware now & this is my happy face =)

next up: painting my kitchen to "match" my paula deen cookware.
should i go all matchy matchy with robin's egg blue?!?!
or should i compliment my cookware with {pale} butter colored walls?!?!

some of us go about our business buying these things without a second thought.

some people can't provide diapers or formula for their babies.
some people can't even live in a safe environment.

thinking about these things doesn't nomally produce warm & fuzzy feelings...
but helping people with these needs can!!!

it's not the normal rachelish color combo, but i do have the perfect quilt planned for it.

here's how i figure it...
miss lindsey needs a "football" quilt. yes a football quilt.
flag football season will be here in a month.
football = lots of outside time for us griffith's.

we are now the eagles and our colors are blue & white.
let's face it...white fabric and football are SO not bff's.
that and blue fabric really isn't very girly looking.

i forsee the perfect football quilt in the making.

the tricky part was choosing a pattern.
of course i wanted to use something that would be ubber cute.

two weeks from today i'll be on a plane to texas.
two weeks from today i'll be away from lindsey for the first time since birth.
two weeks from today i'll cry like a baby in the airport bathroom.
